The Outpatient Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) performs a variety of specialized duties related to nutrition therapy for patients, families, staff and the community. The RDN serves as a member of the care team, available for all nutrition related services in the clinic as well as classes for the community. The RDN will perform nutrition assessment, education and management to patients with chronic conditions who are at risk of disease progression, malnutrition as well as patients and families who need disease prevention education. This will include, but is not limited to diabetes education, weight management, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, malnutrition, gastrointestinal disorders, failure to thrive and enteral feeding. The RDN should be familiar with functional nutrition and getting to root causes of chronic diseases. The role of the RDN will be available to perform nutrition duties via individual outpatient visits in the clinic, nutrition classes and may be required to provide home visits.
Bachelor’s degree in nutrition with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Master’s degree or completion of dietetic internship program.
Minimum Work Experience
One year of experience as a clinical dietitian or in the field of nutrition.
Maintains Kentucky dietitian license and meets ongoing licensure requirements.
Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration or registry eligible (must achieve Registered Dietitian credential within 3 months of date of hire).
Successful applicants will be self-directed, mature and well organized with pleasant personality and have a professional and warm demeanor that facilitates the development of a collaborative relationship with patients and providers. Successful applicants will demonstrate strong initiative, feel comfortable making clinical decisions and are confident in their decisions and documentation utilizing the nutrition care process. Successful applicants will interpret medical documentation and apply it to the nutrition plan. Successful applicants will feel comfortable maintaining availability and flexibility to assess and treat patients presented with a variety of health and behavioral needs. Appropriate candidates will have a knowledge of chronic diseases, medications, laboratory results and indications related to nutrition therapy, human relations, nutritional psychiatry, and group dynamics appropriate for their level of education and experience. Ideal applicants will have an understanding of Integrative and Functional Medicine as well as traditional approaches and principles with strong documentation skills. Successful applicants must be comfortable providing nutrition care to patients of all ages including pediatrics, adults and geriatrics. Candidates should possess the ability to work in a rural setting utilizing available facilities and resources. Critical to the role is the willingness to acknowledge and respect the cultural and social background of patients and family members.
Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of practice through reading and in-services. This is especially important in the areas of patient flow, scheduling, assuring correct patient information, and handling patient relations. Obeys appropriate dress code as specified in Employee Handbook. Provides superior customer service to all patients, external customers (office staff of other offices, hospital, community agencies, etc.), and co-workers. Serves as an ambassador of the White House Clinics in all conversations and interactions with these parties.
Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Mission and Vision and Values of the organization. Maintains clinic standards for a clean and quiet patient environment to maintain a positive patient care experience. Promotes culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention.
Maintains compliance with organization’s policies, as well as established practices, protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards. Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information. Adheres to professional standards, clinic policies and procedures (OSHA, HIPAA, Standing Orders, etc.), federal, state, and local requirements, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Inspector General (OIG), etc. Cooperates fully with all aspects of Corporate Compliance Plan and Standards of Conduct. Participates in all safety programs which may include assignment to an emergency response team.
All Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are directly accountable to the Clinical Director.
The RDN is responsible for maintaining appropriate CEU and license requirements.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires a variety of physically and mentally demanding activities. Requires full use of eyes, ears, and hands. Requires sitting, walking, some bending, stooping, stretching and lifting (generally not in excess of 75 pounds at a time). Requires ability to prepare written reports and use telephone and computer equipment.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
A position exempt from wage and hour laws requires hours in excess of 40 per week including night, weekend, and holiday work from time to time. Work is performed in health care environments including medical office, with potential exposure to communicable diseases as well as off site and in patient homes when needed. Possible exposure to aggressive or violent patients.
Evaluated annually by the clinical director. A peer evaluation is also done annually for evaluation of specific nutrition related knowledge. Degree of compliance with this Job Description and criteria noted in the employment agreement will be a major aspect of the evaluation.
